Important Dates
Throughout the tax season, there are several dates to keep in mind. Knowing these dates will ensure you don't miss a tax deadline and encounter penalties.
Tax Season Start Date
Tax season starts mid - late January 2023. Although the IRS has not released this official date yet, based on past years, we estimate that the IRS will start processing tax returns on January 23, 2023. However, you can start filing today, and when the processing window opens, you'll be one of the first to be processed.
Tax Season Deadline
Avoid the late filing penalty. File your tax return by April 18, 2023. If you are not ready to file by April 18, you can file an extension of time to file by the deadline and get 6 more months to prepare.
Business Tax Deadline
Certain business tax returns are due by March 15, 2023. If you have a Partnership, LLC, or S - Corporation, you must file by March 15, 2023. However, if your company is setup as a C - Corporation (your business name, Inc.) and you did NOT elect to be an S - Corp, your tax return is due by April 18, 2023.
Last Day to pay 2022 Estimated Taxes
The deadline to make the last estimated tax payment on your 2022 income if you owed taxes last year or did not pay withholding taxes in 2022 is January 17, 2023.
2023 Tax Extension Deadline
If you filed a timely tax return extension on or before April, 18, 2023, you have until October 16, 2023 to file your 2022 tax return. However if you expect to have a balance due, pay your taxes with your extension to avoid late payment penalties.
2023 Business Tax Extension Deadline
If you filed a timely Business tax return extension on or before March 15, 2023, you have until September 15, 2023 to file your 2022 tax return. If you are a C - Corp, you have until October 16, 2023 to file your extended tax return. However if you expect to have a balance due, pay your taxes with your extension to avoid late payment penalties.
File and Provide 2022 Tax Form
All employers must file and furnish W-2 statements and certain other tax forms including 1099-NEC to employees and contract workers by January 31, 2023. If you have not received your W - 2 or 1099-NEC by then, contact your employer.
